i have never sold any of my relic finds except bulletts and have been approached to sell a couple of them by a collector who says he will pay top dollar. the rub is, i dont know what top dollar should be. can anyone give me an approximate value for....1) a prewar virginia malitia brass clipcorner buckle, 2 3/4" x 3 3/4" with very detailed carvings on the front including initials and name W.F.Payne. it was dug by myself about 1995 a couple blocks from the old fairfax courthouse in fairfax city virginia. 2) a csn ship button, coat, approx 7/8", missing shank, back pushed in slightly, but in very good condition, all intact and very clear, no guild. three masted scooner with letters CSN underneath and stars around. E.M. Lewis, Richmond backmark. very rare, im told, and i have only see two others at shows. was dug about 1996 near Rapidan va in a north carolina camp. any help on how much i should ask for them would be appreciated.

I found half of a porcelin plate around the base of culps hill last summer. it was on the north east face on the flats before the hill gets really steep. Anyway, it had been raining alot and a streambed that was not usually there was going through the woods. The pieces were stuck under a tree root damming up this new watershed. Does anyone know why this would be here?? I dont have a pic, but it is a porcelain plate from 19th century white with blue vines and floral designs typical of the 18th 19th cent. My only guess was officers had there own plates utensils etc, i just dont know. my only other guess would be picnic ers to the field after the war and left if, but who takes porcelain to a picnic. There is Nothing in close proximity to the find. any ideas?? thanks

Hello,

On a recent trip to Atlanta, my nephew showed me a heavy rectangular plate (lead?) about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide.  It has some sort of seal on one side with a "C" on one side and a "S" on the other.  He said a friend found it buried in an Alabama field and gave it to him.  I don't think it is a Confederate belt buckle because it is too heavy and not oval shaped.  Does anyone have an idea what this artifact is?

Ok you saber experts,I need help IDing this guard.I was told it was dug in Fredericksburg and like most dug relics probably Confederate. The only markings I can find is what looks to be "83" on the back near the edge. The 8 appears to be double stamped.

I found this in bunker hill West Virginia this spring along with some other things. It measures 5 5/8 in. in diameter and has a five point star in the middle with five little holes to the left and right of it and five holes at the top and bottom outer rims and a bigger hole at the right and left rim were it was rivited to the other peice of it that I found a few feet away, we thaught it might have been a cantine but the holes make no sence. Would anyone have an idea of what it is or might be.

Scovills was used as back make during 1837 to 1850 but non of the reference books list this button.

I was metal detecting and found this button made by the Waterbury Button Company. I contacted them but they dont keep records they said. It has the letters "TNC" on the front and says "SUPERIOR QUALITY" on the back which is how I knew who made it. I know they made buttons for the North and the South during the Civil War and i know it dates from that time period because of how it was made. Is it really a war time button? Was it made for the war? If not what is it? thanks and I really appreciate the info!

Gentlemen/women:

I have a steel ball supposedly found in Perryville, KY near the battlefield.  It is almost exactly 2" in diameter, very rusty, and has a crude seam through the middle of it.  It weighs about 1.5 pounds.

I wasn't sure if the size and weight matched any artillery calibers used by either army.  Is this a fake or is it possibly from a small artillery piece?  Cannister shot maybe?

Thanks for the help...

Ted
