I found this 8 pounder cannon ball in my yard which is old farm land on the west side of Lawrence, Kansas. I'm thinking it's from the Quantrill's Raiders or Civil War time period. I'd like to have it difused but don't know who I can take it to. A local bomb squad officer said if he looked at it and determined it was a live shell he'd have to confiscate it to destroy. Is there anyone in this area?

I found half of a porcelin plate around the base of culps hill last summer. it was on the north east face on the flats before the hill gets really steep. Anyway, it had been raining alot and a streambed that was not usually there was going through the woods. The pieces were stuck under a tree root damming up this new watershed. Does anyone know why this would be here?? I dont have a pic, but it is a porcelain plate from 19th century white with blue vines and floral designs typical of the 18th 19th cent. My only guess was officers had there own plates utensils etc, i just dont know. my only other guess would be picnic ers to the field after the war and left if, but who takes porcelain to a picnic. There is Nothing in close proximity to the find. any ideas?? thanks

Hello,

On a recent trip to Atlanta, my nephew showed me a heavy rectangular plate (lead?) about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide. It has some sort of seal on one side with a "C" on one side and a "S" on the other. He said a friend found it buried in an Alabama field and gave it to him. I don't think it is a Confederate belt buckle because it is too heavy and not oval shaped. Does anyone have an idea what this artifact is?

David

It measures 5 5/8 in. in diameter and has a five point star in the middle with five little holes to the left and right of it and five holes at the top and bottom outer rims and a bigger hole at the right and left rim were it was rivited to the other peice of it that I found a few feet away, we thaught it might have been a cantine but the holes make no sence.

I was metal detecting and found this button made by the Waterbury Button Company. I contacted them but they dont keep records they said. It has the letters "TNC" on the front and says "SUPERIOR QUALITY" on the back which is how I knew who made it. I know they made buttons for the North and the South during the Civil War and i know it dates from that time period because of how it was made. Is it really a war time button? Was it made for the war? If not what is it? thanks and I really appreciate the info!

Hi, I have recently purchased a confederate belt buckle at a local auction in my home town. I am very curious about the buckle. When it was being sold the auctioneer advertised it as some kind of crate seal but on closer examination(after I bought it very resonable) It is a buckle. In large letters it says C.S.A. this is very visable but what wasn't seen at the auction is what raises my curiousity. In much smaller less destinctive print above the CSA it reads "Libby prison". below the CSA it reads"Richmond Virginia Guard company A". The buckle looks very real weather it is or not I'm not sure but I am very interested in the item as I have never seen a specific buckle of this nature. There are no hooks on the back and there are 2 tiny holes one on each side. The buckle is square in shape. can anyone tell me anything about this??

I am a rookie in the sport of metal detecting and looking for some advice on a good metal detector that can detect items greater than 8". I have property where the first battle of Kernstown was fought and was farmed for many years. I have found two mini balls and two pocket knives (not sure if they are CW era or not yet) and feel I'm missing items that are deeper than what I am detecting. Any help would be much appreciated.

Found in old barn in NJ - sword type bayonet, overall length 27", blade length 22 5/16", handle (brass with ribs) 4 6/8" long.

The spring is 2" long and the socket (for barrel) is 7/8" dia.

Can't quite make out engraving on hilt, but can see the first 3 letters and they appear to be COLLIN_ _ _ last three letters (I think) are too covered with rust & dirt to read.

Along slot is a number: 3041 and at the base of handle are the letters FCW.

Don't want to buy a book just to find out about this acuisition as bayonets are not my primary interest.

Looking for info or web source with pictures to compare.

Condition seems decent with some niks on blade, but no apparent major damage or broken pieces.

By the way - what weapon was a zouave bayonet used on? If this is one, I would like to know that too.

I have this bayonet that belonged to my 2x great grandfather. I have not been able to find one on the internet just like it.

It does appear to be damaged on the musket end. The width of the blade narrows as it connects to to the 90 degree turn which is differant than what I have seen pictures of. I do not really know if it was from the Revolutionary or Civil War. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!!
