I'm brand new to metal detecting and this is what I found on day two. I know the pictures may not be too good, but are these civil war bullets or post civil war bullets??? Also, I believe this is a flat button as well, am I right or wrong?

Much thanks

James,

The bullets are not Civil War but .45 caliber bullets with metal jackets. The button is hard to see clearly but does look like a flat or coin button. Looks like you have been doing a lot of metal detecting. Keep hunting, you never know what will turn up.

I concur with barryvthose bullets were diff fired out of a modern weapon...any bullet with a copper jacket will not be from the civil war, or any bullet with a cannelure (bottom pic 2nd to left) thats the indented seating guide. when you do find a civil war bullet and clean it up it will more often be white in color..AKA a patina lead does rust (oxidize) the patina is that white color..........the button is most diff old looks like a flat button at first glance...i would keep hunting in the area you found the button....as far as being a button off a civil war uniform its possible but not a guarantee. these flat buttons or coin buttons were around long before the first shot was taken at fort sumter. if you one of these style buttons amist civil war bullets more than likely it came off a confederate uniform. keep digging though it took me awhile to find my first bullet....i would recommend googling civil war bullet pics to give you an idea what your looking at...good luck james
