Relic Hunting

 Sliver Creek Seeded Relic Hunt

Dr. Larry Cooper recently invited me to a private seeded relic hunt on some wooded property that he owns in North Georgia. He invited five people that he has hunted with over the years, to the hunt. He said that this was his way to say thanks to his relic hunting buddies.

Participants in the hunt were (L to R): Frank Warren, Jerry Wormsley, Dr. Larry Cooper, Bill Jones, Barry Banks, and Dr. Bill Blackman.

Dr. Cooper explains the hunt rules and then gives a tour of the property. He showed where the actual boundaries for the relics were located. He owns fifty acres, so the actual hunt site was scaled down for the participants. Some of the seeded items were coins, bullets, buttons, and several plates. There was a point system for relics and even a point for any type of trash collected.

A cannon was fired to signal the start of the hunt and everyone swept their detectors into the woods.

Bill Jones' detector went on the blick and Frank Warren spends time trying to repair it.  Larry discusses relic hunting techniques with Jerry Wormsley.

Dr. Blackman makes relic hunting look easy. The two hours hunting went by too fast. When it was over, we got down to counting points.  Even though there were two plates buried no one found them. Each plate was worth 10 points plus would belong to the finder.  Jerry inspects his finds and adds up his points while Frank looks on.

After points were added up, Larry awarded prizes with a detector being the top prize. The photo on right is Dr. Blackman's finds and he won the top prize. There were also other prizes awarded for most coins and a raffle. We got to keep the variety of relics such as buttons, bullets, and various brass items.

Comparing relics is alway entertaining expecially with friends. In the photo on the right, Bill Jones picks out a nice collector coin as one of his prizes that Larry donated. Larry provided lunch after the prizes were awarded. It just doesn't get any better than this for a nice Fall hunt. We all had such a good time, Dr. Cooper is making plans for another hunt next year.
